Porta Nigra

The Porta Nigra is a Roman city gate from the 2nd century and the best-known landmark in Trier. It stands at the north end of the pedestrian centre, so it is a natural place to start.

Simeonstrasse and the Hauptmarkt

From the gate, Simeonstrasse leads into the Hauptmarkt, the main market square, with its market cross and the old houses around it.

Cathedral and Church of Our Lady

Behind the market, the cathedral and the Church of Our Lady stand side by side. Together with the Roman monuments they form the UNESCO site.

Roman sites and the Moselle

The Imperial Baths and the Basilica of Constantine are more Roman buildings in the centre, and the Roman Bridge crosses the Moselle. A walk along the river is a quiet way to finish.

Practical tips

The centre is compact, so comfortable shoes are enough.

Sights such as the Porta Nigra and the Imperial Baths have their own opening times, so check before you visit.
